Meeting Announcement

Welcome! to the first meeting of the 2000/2001 season of the Amherst Railway Society . We hope everyone has had a wonderful summer. Our meeting is Tuesday, September 19, 2000, 8:00p.m. at the Amherst Middle School.

Hazmat and the Safety Train

Each year, millions of gallons of hazardous material travel across New England's rail lines. Yet local fire Departments, often the first responders to these disasters, are inadequately prepared to assess the hazards on site and they must determine the most effective steps to immediately contain the emergency. The Mass Call/Volunteer Firefighters Association has put together a chemical safety train consisting of three recently acquired tank cars and a box car that is being used as a traveling classroom. This is the only safety train operated buy a fire organization in this country. Come and hear MC/VFA Safety Train Coordinator John O'Neill talk about this important project. Mr. O'Neill is a lieutenant in the Sherborn, MA Fire Department. This is the fourth major project that O'Neill has worked on with Conrail/CSX. .

At a June Board meeting, the Directors approved the following positions.:

  • David Royce - Treasurer
  • Bob Buck - Show Chairman
  • Doug Moore - Trip coordinator
  • John Randall - Video Librarian
When we see these people, let us thank them for the many hours of service they provide the Society as volunteers.

From our Treasurer: Approximately 100 reminders of non-payment of Fiscal Year 2000 membership dues were mailed on August 22, 2000. Prompt payment of dues will insure that you receive your monthly newsletters and your free one-day pass to the "Big Show" in February 2001.

Let us welcome the following NEW MEMBERS!
Robert Stein Charles Camp

The Board of Directors has approved continuing the use of a third building at our show. Please! mark your calendars now. Volunteering part of one day allows you admission that day, and your free pass gets you in the second day - a bargain. Big Railroad Hobby Show, Saturday & Sunday February 3&4, 2001
