Meeting Announcement

Welcome to the 2002/2003 season of the Amherst Railway Society! The kick-off meeting will be Tuesday, September 17, 2002, 8:00 P.M., at the Amherst Middle School.

“ 20 Years of the Boston & Maine - 1966 to 1986”

New England native and author Brian Jennison will present an interesting show on the Boston & Maine, including favorite places like Dover, NH, the Conway Branch, the Conn River Line and the West End, as well as commuter trains in Boston. Some right-of -way photos and shots of abandoned lines, including a wreck at Penacook, NH in 1967 will make this show worth seeing.

Brian was born in Chelsea, MA, but moved up and down the eastern seaboard as a kid because his father was a career naval officer. Brian's first train trip was on a Boy Scout special from Lakehurst, NJ to Jersey City in April 1961. He remembers the consist to this day: a CNJ GP7 and 13 funky old commuter coaches. Brian went out to Berkeley, CA to college, and has stayed out west ever since, except when he comes "home" yearly to visit family. He is presently Director of Lane County Regional Air Pollution Authority in Oregon. He has contributed numerous articles and photos in various railfan magazines, and has co-authored two books about Maine railroading (Railroads of the Pine Tree State 1 & 2, with Don Marson), and one about the Southern Pacific in Oregon, with Vic Neves. Brian and Vic are presently working on a second SP book.

A table will be set up at the rear of the auditorium for the display of photos, models, etc., during our meeting.

Check your membership date! Please check the membership date on your envelope. If it says 2002, you are due to renew this fall. After November, you will no longer receive mailings if you haven't renewed.

Crawford Notch Express!! Don't miss a great opportunity to ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad through picturesque Crawford Notch, NH, in foliage season, Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002. See enclosed flyer or call Doug Moore: 413-436-9787.

It's not too early to mark your calendars for this remarkable event, tell your friends, or arrange ahead of time to get some time off to help put this show on. It is a group effort and we are a large group, although it is a surprisingly small group of people who do most of the work. Make this your year to join in the effort.
