May 20, 2003
The next meeting of the Amherst Railway Society is Tuesday, May 20, 2003, 8:00 P.M. at the Amherst Middle School.
The Boston & Maine 3713 Restoration Project
Our speakers will be Carl Packer and Mike Giannetta, both members of the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valley Chapter of the NRHS in Scranton, PA. They will bring us up to date on the restoration of Boston & Maine locomotive 3713. You all should know that the Society has made significant contributions to this project over a period of several years. Carl Packer is married with 4 children, and has collected Lionel trains, lanterns and pictures of local railroads for 37 years. One grandfather of his was an engineer on the D&H RR out of Carbondale, PA, and the other grandfather worked in the Lackawanna Shops in Scranton, PA. Mike Giannetta grew up 300 feet from the main line of the Lackwanna RR, which gave him the chance to know the engineers and throw them apples. His father was an engineer for the Erie RR and his grandfather worked in the Erie Locomotive Shops. He was a chairman of the NRHS chapter for 12 years and a member of the Steamtown Board of Directors. Mike is a songwriter, joke teller, and he established the Giannetta Music store in downtown Scranton over 50 years ago. Most important of all is his role as Chairman of the B & M 3713 Restoration Fund Drive. Mike will be there to welcome all who take the Steamtown Safari trip on May 31 and June 1, 2003 to see first hand the restoration work on B & M 3713.

22 members braved the elements to travel by coach to the Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven, CT on April 26th. We were all invited down for their members day festivities including numerous rides on several trolleys, a delicious buffet, and a formal thank-you speech to the society for the contributions we have made over the years and specifically for Conn. Car #1602. Despite steady rain, car #1602 made its inaugural run with passengers. The Amherst Railway Society was highly spoken of for the contributions made to numerous railroad related organizations and projects.
Some of you may have seen notices of Mass Bay RREs First Fantrip on New Englands newest tourist line, the Wilton Scenic RR. The date has been indefinitely postponed due to track work. Two ex-BC Rail RDCs will travel the Milford-Bennington RR (ex-B&M Hillsboro Branch) from Milford to Greenfield, NH and return. Please call
