Meeting Announcement

The next meeting of the Amherst Railway Society is Tuesday, September 16, 2003, 8:00 P.M. at the Amherst Middle School.

Rails to Trails

Our speaker is Craig Della Penna, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s New England Field Representative, and author of 3 books on rail trails and their history. His presentation is about rail-trails all around this region, long-gone corridors being resurrected for recreational use (Rutland’s Island Line and Corkscrew Division, B & M’s Central Mass Division, and many more). He has a large collection of “then and now” photography, (archival photos of a railroad scene and then a contemporary view of the same scene as a trail).

Craig has bicycled on and cataloged the railroad history of over 250 rail-trails and future rail-trails in the eastern U.S. He came to RTC in 1998 from the railroad industry where he marketed rail freight for 20 years and operated the region’s largest railroad-owned trans-loading facility. In his spare time, he and his wife Kathleen have restored an 1865 house in Northampton, MA and converted it to the Sugar Maple Trailside Inn, the first B&B in southern New England located directly adjacent to a rail-trail (ex NH Williamsburg Branch), catering to both railfans and trailfans (on the web at http://www.sugar-maple-inn.com).

At our June, 2003 meeting we elected the following slate of officers:

  • President- Doug Moore
  • Vice-President- vacant/to be filled
  • Secretary- Janet Moore
  • Directors- Harvey Allen, Alan Rice, Peter Veneman

Sy Berger has done a great job for us as VP, but has resigned. He has the speakers lined up for this year as you can see on the enclosed calendar. The biggest part of the position is lining up the speakers for the 8 monthly meetings and coordinating travel arrangements, overnight accommodations (if necessary), etc for the speaker. The Vice-President also meets and votes with the Board of Directors. If anyone is interested in this position, please contact Doug Moore at (413)436-7071 by September 15th. At the meeting on September 16th the Board will present one candidate to the membership for a vote.

At an August Board of Directors meeting, the following people were reappointed:

  • Treasurer- David Royce
  • Show Director- Bob Buck
  • Trip Chairman- Doug Moore

Seats are still available on Mystic Valley Railway Society’s “New England Explorer” form Worcester to Gardner, MA on October 4th. For further info call (617) 361-4445 or go to: http://www.mysticvalleyrs.org

I hope everyone has had a productive summer. If you have photos, models, etc to share, please bring them. There is a table set up for that purpose.
