Welcome back!! The next meeting of the Amherst Railway Society will be Tuesday, September 21, 2004, 8:00 P.M. at the Amherst Middle School.
RAILROADS OF MAINE IN THE 1950s
Our speaker, David R. Sweetland, will present a color slide show covering operation of trains, motive power, freight cars, etc. on the Bangor and Aroostook, International of Maine - CP, Belfast and Moosehead Lake, Maine Central, Portland Terminal and Grand Trunk.
David Sweetland started working for the Pennsylvania Railroad Mechanical Dept. in 1959 after graduating from the University of Maine with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and later served in the US Army Reserves in the 706th Railway Transportation Group. Dave photographed all the NE railroads during the 1950s from his home in Providence, RI and in Maine during his college years. He retired from Conrail as Director of Technical Training in 1996 and has worked as a consultant at the Academy of Industrial Training operating the locomotive and teaching students going into the railroad industry. He had written 50 railroad books covering railroads in New England - the New Haven, the Pennsylvania, New York Central, Erie, Lackawanna and Delaware & Hudson. Also, he has written a five book series on Fairbanks-Morse Locomotives with three published to date. Many of you have met David and his wife, Sue, selling books at our railroad hobby show.
Results of the business meeting held on June 15, 2004: Elected were Doug Moore - President, Ira Laby - Vice-President, Janet Moore - Secretary, and Peter Veneman, Harvey Allen, and Alan Rice - all members at large.
The membership also voted in favor of granting a total of $31,000 to 25 organizations to help worthwhile railroad related projects.
REMINDERS!! Membership dues have gone up: 1 yr - $15.00, 3 yrs - $40.00, and 5 yrs - $60.00. Please check the date on your mailing label. If it says 2004, then your last newsletter will be in November unless you renew.
There will be a table set up at the back of the hall for you to display models, photos, etc. Please bring them and share with all of us.
