Meeting Announcement

The next meeting of the Amherst Railway Society will be Tuesday, October 19, 2004, 8:00 P.M. at the Amherst Middle School.

Please note, the meeting is in the cafeteria.

Vanishing Steam in Cuba

Greg Nazarow will offer us a slide show compiled from 2 legal trips to Cuba in 2001 and 2003. The program will include visits to about a dozen mills and their locomotive shops, some vintage automobiles and some views of operations on the national railway, FCC. Anticipate a visit to the world's greatest accidental museum, where time has almost stood still since 1959. Greg graduated from Tufts in 1983 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and from Babson College in 1989 with a MBA. In 1991, he started doing waybilling, car accounting, marketing studies, etc., with Walt Stapleton of Claremont, NH. He is currently Director of (Rail) Operations Analysis for SYSTRA Consulting in Lebanon, NH. SYSTRA'S world headquarters is in Paris, France. The company engages in railway and rail transit consulting engineering work all over the world.

Please notice the date on your address label. If it says "2004", you are due to renew. Your last newsletter will be in November. Dues are now: $15.00 - I year, $40.00 - 3 years, and $60.00 - 5 years.

On Saturday, Oct. 2, about 25 ARS members and friends traveled to Bretton Woods, NH to ride the Mt. Washington Cog Railway. The weather was not bad, foliage was great, although the top of the mountain was in a cloud. This was a unique opertunity to see small steam engines operating on an average grade of 25%.
