Meeting Announcement

The next meeting of the Amherst Railway Society is Tuesday, March 15, 2005, 8:00 p.m. at the Amherst Middle School.

“Railroads on Mts. Nonotuck & Tom”

Our speaker will be Robert Schwobe. His slide show titled “The Mt. Tom Range” features Mt. Tom history, both past and present. He has subtitled the program “Rails with History”, and will focus on all rail systems on and around the Mt. Tom Range, including train, trolley, inclined, industrial and entertainment. Mr. Schwobe lives in Easthampton with his wife, and for the last 25 years has made the Mt. Tom Range and its history a personal research project.

Many thanks to all who volunteered many hours at our 2005 RR Hobby Show in West Springfield. Not only those who worked at show time, but those who work year round to make the show possible. It was a success once more with ticketed attendance of 16,953 (not including under 5’s and vendors). Don’t forget to put next year’s dates on your calendars.

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of longtime member Cliff Stone of Southwick, MA. Many of you will remember Cliff as Vice-President for more than 10 years. Cliff had a table at the show for years featuring his “O-Scale” scratch-built locomotives and railroad equipment. In recent years, Cliff was kept at home taking care of his wife who passed away this past December. Cliff lived a long, full life of 92 years, survived by 2 sons, grandchildren and one great grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to Southwick Ambulance Fund, PO Box 532, Southwick, MA 01077, or the K9 Unit of the Southwick Police Dept., 11 Depot St., Southwick, MA 01077.

It was with equal sadness that we received the news from Phil and Brenda Opielowski of the passing of their 3 _ yr old grandson, Trent Avery, following his valiant battle against a serious illness. Our prayers are with his parents Erica and Gary and his older brother Adam. Funeral arrangements were managed by Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home. Donations may be made to Griffin’s Friends in Springfield, MA or to Ann Marie Cancer Fund in Barry, MA.

Three volunteers needed for Refreshment Committee ! Here is a way to serve your fellow members in a much appreciated way. As many of you know, refreshments are provided following every Tuesday meeting. Our hard working committee of Joe Cote, Dick Joyce and Bud Sharrow, has decided it is time to step down, and we need 3 new people. Our thanks to them for a job well done. The job includes picking up donuts and soda, setting up and brewing coffee in the club-owned pot, and clean-up after the meeting.
