Amherst Railway Society
April 17, 2007
Meeting Announcement

The next meeting of the Amherst Railway Society is Tuesday, April 17, 2007, 8:00 p.m. at the Amherst Middle School.

“Africa, Land of the Giants”
By Mr. Allan Wiswall

Our speaker, Allan Wiswall will present a selection of slides of steam specials in southern Africa as well as a brief look at Botswana wildlife and a few photos of Victoria Falls. We will visit the South African Railway and National Railways of Zimbabwe systems and a bit of Botswana seeing both 42” and 24’ gauge lines. Included are scenes taken from the sea level of the Indian Ocean to the summit of Montague Pass as our train passes thru 7 tunnels in the Oteniqua Mountain range. Many classes of locomotives will be shown ranging from their small 1890 vintage 4-8-0’s to some scenes with a pair of their largest Garrett locomotives double headed.

This series of South African tours brings to a close Allan’s 55 years of world travel and railway photography. Starting in 1949 by taking black & white photos of Boston area local trains, he eventually graduated to color slides with a collection of some 30,000 slides covering visits to 24 countries including Western Europe, India, and China and the Ukraine as well as southern Africa. Allen has always kept close to railroading in New England by volunteering on the White Mountain Central Railroad in Lincoln NH for the past 49 years.

A businesss meeting of the society will be held for the purpose of considering amendments to the bylaws to establish the Honorary Life Membership.

Amherst Railway Society, Inc.

Proposed Amendments of the Bylaws to be considered by the membership on April 17, 2007.

The purpose of these amendments is to create an Honorary Life Membership to provide a way for the Society to recognize the extraordinary service of a Society member over an extended period of time. The Board anticipates that there will be very few Honorary Life Members.

The current membership article reads as follows:

ARTICLE 3 - MEMBERSHIP

3.1 Regular membership is open to anyone interested in railroads or railroading.

3.2 Student membership is open to anyone who is a full time student at an established school or college and who is interested in railroads or railroading.

The amendment will add a section 3.3 as follows:

3.3 Honorary life membership may be granted by vote of the Board of Directors to recognize extraordinary service to the Society over an extended period of time.

3.31 Honorary Life members have the same rights and privileges as regular and student members.

The current dues article reads as follows:

ARTICLE 4.    DUES

4.1 The Board of Directors shall establish annual dues for each membership class subject to ratification by the membership at the Annual Meeting.

4.2. Dues will be payable on or before June 30 for the coming fiscal year.

4.3. Only members who have paid dues for the current fiscal year will be considered members in good standing.

The amendments would change the dues article to read as follows:

4.1 The Board of Directors shall establish annual dues for regular and student members subject to ratification by the membership at the Annual Meeting.

4.11 Honorary life members shall be exempt from payment of annual dues.

4.2. Dues will be payable on or before June 30 for the coming fiscal year.

4.3. Only members who have paid dues for the current fiscal year or who are honorary life members will be considered members in good standing.

The Board of Directors unanimously approved these amendments to the Bylaws on March 14, 2007.
