Amherst Railway Society
Meeting Announcement

The next meeting of the Amherst Railway Society will be 8 pm EDT Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at the Amherst Regional Middle School Auditorium

“Traveling with my Cameras”
by Tom Nanos

In this presentation we’ll explore a variety of railroads, from Class 1s like CSX and Norfolk Southern, to tourist and shortline operators like New Hope & Ivyland and the Black River & Western. The states we’ll visit include New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Ohio, in both urban and rural settings, in any weather condition imaginable, both under the sun as well as the cover of darkness.

Photography is something that has been a passion of Tom Nanos since Christmas in the mid-1980s when his parents gave him a basic darkroom kit. He primarily photographs railroading in and around southern New England, in particular focusing on southeastern Connecticut. While shooting, he usually trys to intertwine some of the sights into his photos, giving things a sense of place. Those elements can include simply a station sign where one once stood, or a state-of-the-art US Navy attack submarine, or even literally the elements – the varying New England weather.

Tom, is a husband and father of two daughters, lives in eastern Connecticut, and is a senior systems analyst/software developer at a major pharmaceutical company in the southeastern area of the state. But sometimes his job brings him to places away from New England, at times for a week or more. “With plenty of involuntary downtime away from the family, I decided that instead of passing that time by sitting in the hotel bar, I’d bring my cameras along for the ride and go out and shoot.”

Tom will have pictures for sale to support Friends of the Valley Railroad and examples of his pictures can be found at his website :

2012-13 Grants Please note: New Grant Schedule

Grant Program Applications

Deadline: October 31, 2012

In 2012 the Amherst Railway Society started the Founders Award to honor those early members of the Society that got the organization going and hence enable us to make the grants now.

We are also shifting the grant cycle from Spring to Fall so that the grants and awards can be announced at the Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show in West Springfield in late January of each year.

The current grant and award cycle opened on July 1, 2012. There are two programs, the $10,000 Founders Award and the grant program for lesser amounts. Recipients of the next round of regular grants, and the Founders Award, will be announced on Sunday, Jan 27, 2013.

NRHS chapter in Worcester County:

Currently, Dylan Lambert, one of our student members is working to establish an NRHS chapter to cover Worcester County. The plan originated after the Depot Foundation of East Brookfield dissolved in April when they failed to prevent the demolition of the depot in East Brookfield. Dylan is working with one of the foundation Organizers, Dennis Lebeau, in this endeavor. The main problem will be to rally up 8 more people so the minimum membership requirements for applying for a charter. If you are interested, please let the ARS Clerk know (in writing by letter or email), and he will forward your information to Dylan.

From the President...

We have received a $1,000 donation in memory of our deceased member, Everett Turner Jr. This donation will be used to support our ongoing grant programs... Mass Bay RRE has added an Advanced Section of the Providence and Worcester Trip to run on SATURDAY, October 13th...
