January, 2014: Amherst Railway Society awards more than $40,000 in grants to preserve rail history

Contact: Sudro Brown, President

Amherst, Mass. -The Amherst Railway Society has awarded more than $40,000 in grants to 19 charitable organizations that work to preserve rail heritage. The awards were made at the society's annual Railroad Hobby Show Jan. 25, 2014 at the Eastern State's Exposition in West Springfield, Mass.

The two-day show, one of the largest in the nation, attracts about 25,000 railroad enthusiasts each year. It is also the society's primary fundraising endeavor and generates the money the society then distributes to rail-related museums, historical societies and restoration groups.

Since 1991, the non-profit Amherst Railway Society has given away about $750,000 in grants.

"We're delighted to be able to share the proceeds of our annual train show with these terrific organizations that work so hard to preserve rail history," said John Sacerdote, the Show Director.

"Preservation of important rail sites and equipment is extremely difficult, even before one considers all the fundraising these groups do," added Amherst Railway Society President Sudro Brown. "We're glad to be able to lend a hand to so many organizations doing such worthwhile work. We plan to keep doing it in the coming years."

The Amherst Railway Society's $10,000 Founders' Award went to the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum in Shelburne Falls, Mass. The museum is raising money to build a fire- resistant metal two-car car barn to house part of its collection.

The Robert A. Buck Award, totaling $2,000 and named in honor of the long-time director of the Railroad Hobby Show, went to the Chester Foundation in Chester, Mass. for restoration of a 1919 wooden caboose displayed at the Chester Depot.

The President's Award, totaling $3,125, went to Branford Electric Railway Association/Shoreline Trolley Museum in East Haven, Conn. for restoration of Connecticut Company Car No. 865.

Remarks of President Sudro Brown
at the Awards and Grants Ceremony at the
Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show
on January 27, 2013:

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show 2013 edition.

I am Sudro Brown, President of the Amherst Railway Society.

Today we will announce recipients of:

  • 2013 Founders Award
  • Robert A Buck Memorial Award
  • President’s Award
  • several other Heritage Grants.

All of these awards are made possible by the success of our annual Railroad Hobby Show, a contribution in memory of a long time member, Everett Turner, and other contributions. As a 501(c)3 organization contributions to the Society are tax deductible for those who itemized deductions on their tax return.

The Founders Award was established in 2011 to honor the original members of the Amherst Railway Society. It was their foresight that makes this and other Awards possible. The 2012 Founders Award went to the Railroad Museum of New England toward rebuilding a diesel engine to be installed in Boston & Maine GP9 #1732. For 2013 we received requests from 19 organizations for the Founders Award.

The 2013 Founders Award goes to Frank Newhall Look Memorial Park for a rail replacement project. The existing rail has been in use since 1948 and the curves are beginning to show their age.

Bob Buck

Robert A Buck Memorial Award

The Robert A Buck Memorial Award is given to honor our VERY long time Show Director. Without Bob’s management of the annual show in the early years it would not have become what it is today.

The 2013 Robert A Buck Memorial Award goes to the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington towards the construction of a Restroom facility. This award will go towards purchase and installation of tile for floors and lower walls of the restrooms.

President’s Award

The 2013 President’s Award is granted to the Friends of the Valley Railroad toward completion of the exterior cosmetic restoration of their 1926 PRR N-5 cabin car (caboose). This caboose runs on the Valley RR trains on the first weekend of the month for a nominal surcharge above the regular train fare.

Heritage Grants

We received requests from 32 organizations for projects totaling over $1,700,000. The total amount requested to fund these projects was $90.000. We were able to fund 14 projects at the requested amount and an additional 11 projects at somewhat less than the requested amount. The total amount granted including the three special awards above is in excess of $57,000. So I would say there are still many dollars needed to complete existing projects. Most of these projects are in the North East area of the United States

The table below shows all of the grants for 2013.
