The Railroad Photography of Ira Labbe
Ira Labbe’s fascination with railroads started when he was a youngster growing up in Holyoke, Massachusetts. . Ira’s father was the manager of the Paramount Theater in downtown Springfield. When Ira would visit his father at the theater, rather than watch movies, Ira would sit in the Assistant Manager’s office and watch trains arriving and departing from Springfield Union Station. As Ira grew older, he developed his photography skills and began his avocation - railroad photography. On Wednesday, March 13, Ira will present a three-part program, covering his railroad photographs in the Springfield area and north to Canada, the railroads of California in the 1950s and 60s, and railroad photographs from Europe.
The California segment of the program will feature SP cab forwards and Daylights, and UP Big Boy and Challenger locomotives. Ira’s photos have been published in two books from Four Ways West Publications and one book from Pine Tree Press. Ira is a retired consulting geologist, and once again a resident of Holyoke, Massachusetts. He is a long-time member of the Amherst Railway Society, and past Vice-president of the organization.Amherst Railway Society meetings are open to the public.
