Textile and paper manufacturing spurred rapid growth in Holyoke in the 1880s. With that growth came a need for more housing and better transportation. In response, the Holyoke Street Railway began operations on February 12, 1884. On May 19th, Jeremy Smith will present the growth and ultimate decline of this interesting railroad. Mr. Smith is an archivist at the University of Massachusetts library. The meeting will be held at the Amherst Regional Middle School, Amherst, MA. It will begin at 7:30 pm.
