Meeting Announcement

The next meeting of the Amherst Railway Society is Tuesday, June 17, 2003, 8:00 P.M. at the Amherst Middle School.

High Speed Rail: Europe, Japan & America

Author and photographer Brian Solomon will provide a beautifully illustrated slide presentation on different high-speed railway networks in Japan, Europe and the USA. Among the trains featured are the Shinkansen "Bullet Trains" including the futuristic "Nozomi 500", known as the "fastest train in the world"; the French TGV,German ICE, and Spanish AVE. Concluding the program will be a review of AmtrakÕs Northeast Corridor with photos of PRR GG1s, high speed turbo trains, and the latest "Acela Express".

Brian Solomon is the author of more than 20 books on railways, including "Bullet Trains", published by MBI. He has traveled widely making photographs and studying railway operation in more than a dozen countries and presently divides his time between Ireland and the USA.

Steamtown Safari Recap: 22 of our members recently returned from a 2 day trip to Steamtown in Scranton, PA. We had a great time despite the weather, and were given a warm welcome from Steamtown and the Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Chapter, NRHS. In addition to a ride behind Canadian Pacific locomotive 2317, we had a tour of the shops where we viewed the progress made on B & M locomotèive 3713 , one of the projects our club has been underwriting for several years. We also had an enjoyable ride on the beautifully restored trolley * 76, built by J.C. Brill in 1926 for the Philadelphia and West Chester Traction Co., along a portion of the Laurel Line, and through the Crown Avenue Tunnel - one of the longest interurban tunnels ever built. Please consider coming on the trip next spring. It is well worth it.

Sit on the platform and watch the trains pass by the Chester, MA Depot, watch video interviews of local residents or visit the restored 1919 "woodie" caboose. Make a day of it!
