Meeting Announcement

The next meeting of the Amherst Railway Society is Tuesday, May 16, 2006, 8:00 p.m., at the Amherst Middle School.

Zack Wyllie and Allan Fisher will review all of the projects at the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum that have been made possible by grants from the Amherst Railway Society. They will also discuss recent and future projects at the museum. The Society has contributed to the following projects: Building of the Sheepscot Station replica, restoration of WW&F boxcar 309, building of WW&F caboose 320, building and equipping the WW&F Machine Shop, building of the Head Tide Water Tank replica, building of WW&F flatcar 126, and building of the Alna Center Station replica.

Zack Wyllie, who joined the museum in 1993, was born in Rockland, ME and has lived in Warren, ME almost his entire life. He is currently President of the Board of Directors and Superintendent of the Railway. He specializes in carpentry projects needed to build the museum’s buildings and build or restore the museum’s rolling equipment.

Allan Fisher, who joined the museum in 1995, is the Membership Secretary, Museum Store Manager and the administrative manager of the museum. Allan retired in 2003 after 32 years at Conrail, and has moved to Nobleboro, ME. His railroad career included Operating Dept. positions of Trainmaster, Terminal Superintendent, Division Superintendent, Regional Superintendent, System Director of Budget Control, System Director of Operating Rules, and as a member of senior staff at Conrail’s headquarters in Philadelphia. He originated the NORAC rulebook and was chairman of the NORAC committee for many years.

A nominating committee has been appointed and its members are Chris Coyle, Chet Louis and Ryan Strong. A short business meeting will precede the June meeting.

Coffee Drinkers!! We are in need of volunteers to take care of the coffee table each month. This is not as hard as it may sound to you. We like to have 3 people in case one person can’t make a meeting. Someone is responsible for the coffee pot, and making the coffee before the meeting. Someone is responsible for picking up donuts and other supplies occasionally. You are reimbursed for supplies and donuts. If you enjoy meeting and conversing with other members and can spare a few extra minutes, the club would greatly appreciate it. Please speak to Doug Moore or any board member.

Our fiscal year ends on June 30, 2006. Please check the year on the mailing label of your newsletter. If it says ‘2006’, your membership expires very soon. Dues are $15.00/ 1 year, $40.00/ 3 years and $60.00/ 5 years.

If you haven’t done it yet, I urge you to visit the Palmer Station and have a bite to eat at the Steaming Tender Restaurant while you watch the trains. Our friends Robin and Blake Lamothe have done an excellent job of transforming this building. Inside dining is in the nicely restored main concourse area of the station. Outside dining will soon commence under the canopy just a few feet from the tracks.
