John H. Roy, Jr., an Electrical Engineer who earned his BSEE in 1988 from the University of Connecticut, has been a life long resident of Connecticut. His interest in railroading began as a model railroader in his formative years and has continued to grow and evolve ever since. He began photographing trains and stations in the mid 1980s and began cataloging depots and freight houses a few years later. He has regularly contributed news, photographs and articles to railroad hobby magazines such as
Trains, Railfan & Railroad,
and
Railpace Newsmagazine.
For the last 19 years he has worked at Electric Boat, where he helps design the best submarines in the world. Today he lives with his wife and two children in Stonington, CT.
Mr. Roy’s book, A Field Guide to Southern New England Depots and Freight Houses , was favorably reviewed in the December 2007 issue of Trains magazine. His presentation, like the book, goes way beyond photographs of stations. Mr. Roy discusses the historical perspective of depots, their distinctive styles, the railroads that built them, and the famous architects who designed them. This may just be the one presentation your non-railfan friends and spouses would enjoy. Mr. Roy will have books available for purchase and is willing to sign them.
