Amherst Railway Society Announces Year 2002 Grants
The members of the Amherst Railway Society approved grants totaling more than $35,000, at the May 21, 2002, meeting. These grants are made to non-profit organizations and groups to assist in all forms of railroad preservation and restoration. This year 23 individual grants were made.
Locomotive restoration grants were awarded to the Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Chapter - NRHS, for work on Boston & Maine locomotive #3713; the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad for injector nozzles on locomotives #497 and #480; and the Flying Yankee Restoration Group for cylinder work on the Winton engine of the Boston & Maine Flying Yankee streamliner.
Grants to electric railroads included the Connecticut Electric Railway Association for restoration of cars #355 and #3001 and seating repair on car #2600; the Seashore Trolley Museum for work on PD&Y Freight Motor & US Mail car #108; the Boston Street Railway Association for renovation Boston Type 5 car #5706; and the Shore Line Trolley Museum for restoration of Connecticut car #865.
Passenger and freight car renovation repair and restoration funds were donated to the Old Colony & Newport Scenic Railway for Boston & Maine coach restoration; Downeast Rail for work on Norfolk & Western dining car #492: the Adirondack Railway Preservation Society for rebuilding the open car Mountain View; the Railroad Museum of New England for restoration of coach #4992: the Danbury Railway Museum to restore New Haven boxcar #34537; the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum for the restoration of cabooses #101 and #551; and the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes RR for restoring flanger #505.
Funds for the repair, restoration and reproduction of buildings were granted to the Old Colony & Fall River Railroad Museum, the Central New York Chapter-NRHS, Friends of Bedford Depot Park, Wiscassett, Waterville & Farmington Railway, the Chester Foundation and the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum.
Additional grants were made to Boothbay Railway Village for their Model Railroad Project; Connecticut Eastern Chapter NRHS for construction of a car transport dolly; and the Walker Transportation Collection of the Beverly Historical Society to aid in their Photo Digitalization Project.
The Amherst Railway Society is a non-profit organization open to anyone with an interest in any form of railroading. The Society holds monthly meetings which are open to the public, runs train trips and sponsors the Big Railroad Hobby Show every February.
